Training
The walk will be a great deal easier if you can familiarise yourself with the route. Ideally you could do this through
three training walks – the Snowdon, Glyder and Carnedd sections of the walk . However, walks that are
not circular are often not practical. I have therefore included five circular walks that cover the full length
of the Welsh 3000s.
In this section you will need to refer back to the other route sections of this website.
Carnedd section
If you can arrange transport at the end-point, the best option is to complete this section in one walk. If this is not possible, here are two circular walks:
Walk One
- Park near Glan Dena at Llyn Ogwen.
- Follow the Carnedd section of the Welsh 3000s route until you reach the summit of Carnedd Llewelyn,
having already climbed Yr Elen.
- Climb Pen yr Helgi Du.
- Descend Y Braich.
- Continue over a wall then a leat, then follow the path on the map which meets the A5 road as far to the right as possible.
- Cross the A5. A path follows the line of the road back to the start point.
Walk Two (for an Abergwyngregyn finish)
- Park at the first car park you come to after passing through Abergwyngregyn village (This car park is
before the bridge at SH 662 720). Alternatively, cross the bridge and take the first road on your right,
which is another car park.
- Start out along the track to the Aber Falls waterfall.
- Turn left off this track at SH 665 717 onto a path through a wooded area. This leads to an ascent diagonally
across scree to the top of the waterfall.
- Follow the Afon Goch stream through the centre of the valley.
- The path fades out further up the valley, but if you use your compass you can navigate directly to the summit of
Garnedd Uchaf (Carnedd Gwenllian).
- Climb Foel Grach and Carnedd Llewelyn.
- Follow the Welsh 3000s route back down to the top car park above Abergwyngregyn.
- Walk down the road a couple of miles to your start point. (If you know the area well you can avoid the road
walk by descending through the woods on the left instead.)
